To help you and your family endure a flood disaster, we’d like to share five flood preparedness tips in honor of FEMA’s National Preparedness Month (NPM).
- Create a Plan – It’s of the utmost importance to create a family emergency plan. Once the plan is in place, review it with your family. To make this process easier, Paul Davis has a Get a Plan form you can download at the link at the bottom of this post.
- Develop an Emergency Kit – Make sure you have the following items: a first aid kit, water (a gallon of water per person for at least 3 days), singal whistle, battery-powered radio, dust masks, moist towelettes, garbage bags, pliers, and local maps.
- Keep Gutters Clean – Your gutters play an important role during heavy rains. Make sure they are clear of debris and drains are unclogged.
- Look at Flood Maps – It’s important to know if you live in a flood area so you can get proper insurance. To see flood maps in Burbank, click the link at the end of the post.
- Understand Flood Vocabulary – Do you know the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning? When a flood watch is issued, it means that there is a possibility that a flood will occur in your area. A flood warning means that a flood is imminent and that you need to be prepared.
